The Ada Tepe rehabilitation project envisages transforming the mine area into a destination for ecotourism, outdoor learning, sport, and recreation.

We plan to establish a protected area that will support the development and coexistence of native plants and animal species and include designated birdwatching areas.

REHABILITATION

The Future of the Ada Tepe Mine

PHASE 1

Physical Closure

This phase is focused on preparing the site for its future after-use once mining and processing cease. This includes re-grading surfaces, constructing drainage systems, and placing topsoil and other materials to support the growth of suitable vegetation. The overall purpose is to create a stable and functional landscape.

At the Ada Tepe mine, progressive rehabilitation has been carried out since the outset of mining and processing activities, with disturbed land being restored and reforested with native species.

Across the areas reclaimed during the mine’s eight years of operation, vegetation characteristic of the Natura 2000 zone has been established, including oak and pine species. Production activities at the mine have ended.

Following the completion of active rehabilitation in 2028, passive aftercare measures are planned to allow vegetation to stabilise. A ten-year monitoring period will follow the completion of passive site reclamation.

A total of 131 hectares of land owned by DPM will be restored and returned to nature, with 95% of this area forming part of the protected Natura 2000 zone.

A total of 3.65 hectares is planned to be designated for tourism, where eco-trails, a caravan parking area, birdwatching spots, and sports facilities will be developed. These amenities will create opportunities for outdoor recreation and sport in a natural setting for residents and visitors of the Krumovgrad municipality.

Providing a protected area within the footprint of the mine will benefit the community and demonstrate a model for transforming industrial sites into areas of high environmental and social value.

PHASE 2

Biological Closure

This phase focuses on the restoration of natural habitats that are typical of Ada Tepe and the Eastern Rhodopes, and create conditions for recreation and tourism.

Ada Tepe Rehabilitated Area

At the end of Ada Tepe's mine life, our closure plan intends to leave behind:

Restored nature
Enhanced public infrastructure
Lasting opportunities for improved quality of life

You can hike the trails with your family, try the outdoor playgrounds, watch the birds and animals in their natural habitat.
